Match against St Brigids got underway on home soil at Ridgewood with an earlier throw in of 11:30am. Bolstered by great numbers with almost all the B camogie squad present, we got started against the Dublin 15 side. Fresh from our win over St Vincent’s in the last fixture, hopes were high for a repeat performance.
From the first whistle this was a very defensive and physical match with both sides vying for the win. Testament to our strong defence and aided by some spectacular saves, we held Brigid’s off whilst trying to achieve our objective of advancing towards their goal. It was soft underfoot to begin with but a promised downpour made the surface even more difficult as the small ball didn’t travel well. So ensued some heavily fought battles to try and shift the no score at half time stalemate. The Finian’s girls fought to retain possession and there were some brilliant displays of passing, shots and teamwork.
With time ticking on, the first score from Brigids came from a huddle in front of our line and was followed quickly by another goal and a point. Willing the game to go on longer, the girls set about getting the ball down to Brigids net but it was too late for us. Unfortunately it didn’t go our way this time but the girls certainly played a hard fought match and worked so hard in the process.
Looking forward to the next clash of the ash.
