🌟Adult Hurlers 2 Match Report by Gene Griffin🌟
A lot of eyes were on Ryder Cup golf and American football today but the real action was in Oatlands College, Stillorglin where the 2nd adult hurling team made the long journey south to play Ranelagh Gaels in the championship quarter final. The good contingent of St Finians supporters that travelled were treated to a belter of a championship match.
Ranelagh Gaels went into the match as hot favourites having gone through the group stages of the championship unbeaten putting up big scores in the process. St Finians manager John Walsh had other ideas and was confident a win could be achieved as after a sluggish start to the campaign, 3 wins on the trot in the final 3 group stages matches saw St Finians bring a momentum into the match.
This was evident in the 1st half as St Finians defended strongly and were staying in touch with the match favourites. The loss of corner back Alex Findlay to injury early on was a blow but Ollie Delaney did well when introduced and the backs soon steadied again well led at full back by Dara Callinian and centre back by Vinny Foley. A goal from the other Daragh coming up towards half time brought St Finians back into contention. At half time St Finians trailed by a point on a 0-10 to 1-6 scoreline
After half time David Murnane struck an early goal to put St Finians into a 2 point lead. Ranelagh Gaels then upped their game and struck for 2 good goals and followed on with points to take a 7 point lead. At this stage St Finians looked to be out of contention. However, the work rate and effort never dropped and when Johnny O' Flaherty struck for a goal with 5 minutes to go , the margin was reduced to 2 points. At this stage St Finians were pushing forward looking to grab the equalising or match winning scores and had Ranelagh Gaels on the back foot. However, on the counter attack Ranelagh Gaels finished to the net after a deflection off the upright in injury time to secure victory for them on a 3-14 to 3-9 scoreline.
Big effort from St Finians but just came up a bit short in a thrilling encounter
Special word for minor player Donie Redmond who led the forwards at centre forward having played a tough minor football match in the morning. Best of luck to Ranelagh Gaels in the semi final.
So thats a wrap on the hurling matches for 2025
Thanks to Johnny Walsh for managing this team and Niall Delaney, James Quigley, Barry Shelly and Ciaran Groves who helped out in various ways
Best of luck to dual players Jack Dempsey, Kieran Murnane and Dylan Grey in the adult football championship semi final next week 👊
