Mid-Week Adult Hurling Report
The World Cup may be in full swing but the real mid-week entertainment was in the mid-week hurling where sweltering hot conditions and water breaks were the order of the day along with more goals than you would see in the World Cup.
The 1st team continued their challenge for the league title and promotion with a 3-17 to 1-15 win over St Maurs in Ridgewood on Tuesday night. Eoin O'Connor with an early goal gave St Finians a great start and further goals by Dara Power and James Elder saw St Finians in a commanding position at half time. The defence was well anchored by David Hattie at full back and the St Finians defence soaked up the 2nd half pressure from St Maurs to claim the league points.
The 2nd team hosted Wild Geese in Nevinstown on Wednesday night. Minor player Daniel Dodrill made his adult hurling debut and was causing problems for the Wild Geese defence. At the other end of the field Brian O'Neill was back in goals for the first time in years and was launching attacks with radar accurate puck outs. Vinny Foley released from the captivity of the full back position he filled in the previous match led the attack well at centre forward. Goals from Donie Boyd and Tom Kennedy and good free taking from Donie Redmond saw St Finians lead at half time on a 2-8 to 2-4 scoreline.
After the consumption of a near reservoir of water at half time , St Finians went about their work refreshed in the 2nd half. Fresh legs from the bench in the form of Paddie Hattie, Alan Lawton and Conor Murnane also assisted the effort with a superb Paddie Hattie goal after a solo run in from the sideline the crucial score of the half. The Wild Geese put on a lot of pressure in the last quarter but the full back line of Alex Findley, Dara Callinan and Josh Ralph held firm and St Finians recorded a 3-14 to 2-7 victory
