With the 2nd team securing a win on Friday night all attention turned to the 1st hurling team on Sunday morning against Whitehall Colmcille in Ridgewood. With the squad depth tested owing to a number of injuries, St. Finians went about their work with great spirit and a belief that victory could be secured.

James Burke opened the scoring with a point and the St. Finians back line then found themselves under a lot of pressure playing against a strong breeze. However, the defence playing well collectively and well marshalled in central positions by Kevin Hammond, David Hattie and Mattie Murray throughout meant that Whitehall were never able to hit the net at any stage in the match. At the other end, Chris Brennan struck a crucial goal and at half time it was level on a scoreline 1-4 to 0-7.

With the breeze to their backs coming in the 2nd half, this looked liked a good half-time position for St Finians. However, Whitehall took the initiative in the middle part of the 2nd half and took the lead with the match nearing full time but drama lay ahead. Fintan Merriman who worked hard at midfield throughout along with Lee Kavanagh, then had a sublime sideline cut in an effort to level the match in Tony Kelly like fashion. With Fintan's effort falling millimetres short, it looked at that stage that Finians may not get another chance.

However, through great work rate, St Finians secured turnovers in the dying stages and won two frees which were converted by Eoin O' Connor which meant Finians secured victory on the narrowest of margins on a 1-12 to 0-14 scoreline. 👏👏

The win keeps Finians in the frame for a promotion place. Next match away to Faughs on the 26.6.22 - all support welcome
