The under 13 division 1 girls finished up their camogie league campaign with a comprehensive win over Ballyboden St Enda's. Shorn of a number of players due to holidays and injuries, the squad depth was put to test.
Partly due to the missing players and partly to encourage more players scoring, the management team decided to make the risky move of taking one of our stalwart centre backs out of defence and in to full forward. This tactic immediately bore fruit with her scoring two quick goals. Ballyboden never recovered and further goals were added before halftime.
The second half was a more even affair with Finians tagging another goal on near the end. Limiting Ballyboden to three scores for the whole game was testament to a strong defence and a particularly impressive performance by our keeper.
It's now championship for the girls after the summer!
Meanwhile and still on home turf, the division 6 camogie league journey came to a conclusion today with the under 13s girls playing a stormer in the final game. Hosting Cuala at Rivervalley, the girls put on an amazing performance and rose to the challenge by the physically strong opposition. Cuala concentrated their efforts in the first half on our 13m line and were rewarded by scoring 3 goals in quick succession. Stringent defence by the Finian’s girls frustrated the efforts of the visitors as we passed the ball to our forwards to get on the score sheet with some stunning displays of strength powering the ball into the net and over the bar. There were countless nail biting moments as the ball hurdled towards our back line only to be smacked forward as a collective exhale celebrated yet another skilful block. Successive scores in the second half gave us back our edge as we closed in on our opponents.
A huge debt of gratitude is owed to the U12’s girls who contributed massively to the play and flow of the match today. They gelled so well with our players and helped ensure a visually exciting and impressive meet today.
With a mere 4 points in it, unfortunately the result didn’t go our way today however, we knew we had fought the good fight with opponents who were well matched to us in terms of skill and determination.
We are looking forward to meeting yet more exciting challenges in the championships later in the summer.
