"St. Finian's win the Battle of Clontarf.
St. Finian's LGFA Minor team travelled to St. Anne's Park on Monday evening to fulfil their final League fixture. This fixture had originally been scheduled for the end of April but that match was called off due to the thunder and lightning storm.
The conditions couldn't have been more different with beautiful sunshine and a firm pitch. Clontarf started the day in pole position in the Division and were full of confidence. However, St. Finian's, short of six regulars on account of the Leaving Certificate, tore into them and scored a goal and two points within the first few minutes. However, Clontarf held their nerve and came back strong to finish the first half six points up.
The first half may have been Clontarf's but the second definitely belonged to St. Finian's. The press, the skills, the goals and the points all added up to an absolute spectacle of speed and power.
Clontarf scored a goal to go two points up with time running out. However, St. Finian's then beat the press and scored a brilliant breakaway goal to win by two points! ππThere were scenes of absolute delight on our sidelines which was in stark contrast to Clontarf.
In passing, we would like to extend our congratulations to Clontarf who did indeed win the League on a points scored basis.
Thanks as always to the U16's players who assisted the team throughout the League and to all the parents for their support. And thanks to all the Minor players who have balanced their studies, Minor Football, Senior Football and Senior Camogie responsibilities this year.
Roll on the Championship! πππͺπͺ
